| 19 June, 2009 - AWAL UPDATE AWAL’s administration of Limited Category aircraft is starting to fire on all cylinders now that the appointment of our new Director of Self Administration, Charlie Camilleri, has been finalized. One of Charlie’s first tasks will be to ensure that all Certificates of Airworthiness for Limited Category aircraft are correctly issued. If you own or operate a Limited Category aircraft, please read the special notice regarding CofA’s. Charlie will also continue with the audit process of aircraft operators, particularly those who conduct adventure flights. Queensland-based AWAL Director Kim Rolph-Smith is working on a Warbird Safety Seminar, to be conducted by AWAL with participation by CASA. The venue will most likely be one of the big hotels near Mascot, and we are looking to hold it in September or October. Further details will appear on this website.
The AWAL Board is working towards conducting a major airshow at Canberra. The local tourism people are enthusiastic . It will be an opportunity to show-off our aircraft, and to generate some funds for our organization.
In April there were TWO P-40 first-flights in Australia. I’d like to personally congratulate Judy Pay and her Old Aeroplane Company in achieving this major milestone in the ex-USAAF Merlin-engined P-40, and Mike Spalding and the North Queensland Warbirds guys for their Allison-engined P-40, also ex USAAF. I also extend congratulations to AWAL Director Steve Death, test pilot for both test flights. It is an indication of Steve’s absolute skill and professionalism that a broken oil line in the Allison resulted in nothing more than an early landing. Well done! Safe flying!
